Eye on Edges is a photographic exploration of California’s landscapes. This collection of 150 photographs presents a rich diversity of scenery spanning the entire state. Some subjects are well known, while others are unique, but all views are seen with a fresh and distinct eye.
Rather than proceeding geographically, the photos are grouped into five chapters by theme—intimate, quiet, divergent, turbulent, and majestic—allowing a poetic feel for place to emerge. Progressing from tight views to grand vistas, photographs are often displayed side by side, strengthening their shared bond. This structure invites the reader on a tour of discovery to compare and contrast the singular landscapes that California offers.
Brief essays delve further into the background stories of select photographs, offering insight into the photographic process and behind-the-scenes details. Ultimately, this is Robert Mackinlay’s personal journey, in which he shares his vision of his home state and reveals his fascination, appreciation, and awe for the emotional force of nature.
